Installation Guide

Installation steps (Ceiling)

* Please read entire document prior to starting installation

* Please wear gloves when handling the products for safety, and to avoid tarnishing unfinished metal prior to painting or clear sealing

Example Layout: (more examples below)

Installation 1

1. Draw a plan to scale of your ceiling or wall, showing the layout of the panels, moldings, fillers and cornices you wish to use.

2. (Optional but highly recommended) Cover your ceiling or wall with wood, or wood strips (most commonly used is mahogany or plywood), making sure the work area is level, flat and smooth. (1/4″ Minimum thickness is recommended)

3. Transfer your layout plan showing the placement to the ceiling or wall by applying a grid with a chalk line. (be sure to measure the pieces for exact measurements and to allow for overlap prior to applying the layout to ceiling)

4. Begin in the centre of the room and work your way out and around the surface, ensuring that you follow the lapping instructions detailed in step 5. *Please note: Two sides of the panel can not be secured until the next piece has been placed underneath*

5. First install the panels, next fillers, then moldings and lastly cornices, making sure these items ‘lap away’ from the main entrance, or main viewing area. For Antique Plated finishes please be sure when installing the center panels that the rubbed grain all runs in the same direction!

6. Nail approximately every 6” to 12″ around the outside edges of the tin panel, and in the center where the pattern allows.

Use one of the following:

  • Dome head nails (can be purchased with panels)
  • #4 pan head screws (can be purchased with panels)
  • Air operated nailer or stapler (eg. 18 gauge brad nail)
  • Industrial strength panel adhesive. (Required if skipping step 2: See “Gluing Information” below)

7. We recommend on larger cornices to use wooden brackets for backing close to the corners and on the overlapped seams. Inside corners are coped, outside corners are mitered. (Templates and pictures are available upon request)

Installation 2

8. Tap any loose seams together with a small piece of wood.

9. If required caulk panel, molding, filler and cornice seams with a clear paintable caulking to create a smooth and tight fit.

10. Pieces installed in the Bright Tin finish can be painted or clear sealed depending on your preference. If leaving in the Bright Tin it is strongly recommended that you apply a clear sealer to protect the metal.

  • Please see our Finishing Guide for painting or sealing instructions
  • It is always best to do a test spot before starting , or to experiment on the back of a panel prior to applying the finish to the entire ceiling.

Installation steps (Backsplash)

* Please read entire document prior to starting installation

* Please wear gloves when handling the products for safety, and to avoid tarnishing unfinished metal prior to painting or clear sealing

1. First remove any old backsplash material to prep the installation surface so there is a solid, smooth surface to glue the tin panels to.

2. (Optional) Cover or replace your drywall with wood (most commonly used is mahogany or plywood), making sure the work area is flat and smooth. (1/4″ thickness or thicker is recommended)

3. Cut your panels to size and install from the corners out so the seams lap away from the generally viewed area and are less visible. Be sure to place the cut edge under the cabinet so they are less visible, and the uncut edge against your countertop. Some panel designs can be bent over a strait edge in order to avoid cutting the panels in the corners.

4. Measure and mark cutouts for electrical switches and receptacles and mark their location on the back of the panels. Drill a small hole in the center of the area to cut out, and use tin snips to cut out the center.

5. If installing to a non-wood substrate such as drywall or plaster be sure to use glue (see gluing instructions below). If installing to a wood substrate air nails, air staples, screws, or hand nails can be used to secure the panels.

6. Optional J-trim or Molding pieces can be used in areas where cut edges are exposed to view (i.e. where a counter ends in the middle of a wall, or around a hood vent).

7. Once the panels are secured in place a bead of clear paintable caulking can be used along the base where the tin meets the countertop as well on any edges or seams that you wish to touch up.

8. Pieces installed in the Bright Tin finish can be painted or clear sealed depending on your preference. If leaving in the Bright Tin it is strongly recommended that you apply a clear sealer to protect the metal.

  • Please see our Finishing Guide for painting or sealing instructions
  • It is always best to do a test spot before starting , or to experiment on the back of a panel prior to applying the finish to the entire Backsplash.

Gluing Information

If gluing tin directly to a substrate that will not hold nails or screws well (i.e. drywall/gyproc) please be sure to use a construction adhesive to secure the tin to the ceiling or wall.  Brad nails, small screws or staples can be used to tack and hold the tin in place while the glue is setting.  If installing to a wall as a decorative feature or a backsplash, double sided tape can also be used in conjunction with the glue to hold the panels in place until the glue dries.

Glue Examples

  • PL Premium
  • Liquid Nails

****We recommend avoiding the use of contact cements as they dry instantly and do not allow you to adjust the alignment of the panel****
